Here are my wines of the past year, with my reviews linked up:
White wine of the year: 2021 Terredora Fiano di Avellino ($18) and 2022 Planeta “La Segreta” Grillo ($14)
Rose’ wine of the year: 2022 Masciarelli “Villa Gemma” Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo ($19)
Red wine of the year: 2019 Capezzana “Villa di Capezzana” Carmignano ($28)
I also want to make some general recommendations regarding best value types of wines, i.e., wine appellations or denominations that tend to be bargains. Based on my last year’s tastings, here are my thoughts:
Best value whites: look for whites from southern Italy (Sicily) and center Italy (Verdicchio, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo). Also, southern France (Roussillion, Cotes du Rhone).
Best value rose’: from Puglia and Abruzzo in Italy. Also, from southern France (Cotes du Rhone, Roussillion), and Spain (Rioja rosado).
Best value reds: here it’s easy – Chianti Classico. Between $14 and $25 you can find delicious, complex, and age-worthy wine that soon will command much higher prices. Also, Rioja continues to be a treasure trove of intriguing wines that are very well priced.
Cheers to another year of great wines to taste and enjoy for everyone!
