This is a Nebbiolo wine from northern Piedmont. Besides Barolo and Barbaresco, Nebbiolo is grown and thrives in this colder area and gives more elegant and lighter wines. Carema is famous for its steep vineyards that make one wonder how is it possible to even grow and harvest grapes in an environment like that. Despite this, the resulting wine is impressive and worth seeking out.
This producer is a cooperative of growers. Among Carema, their wines tend to be great values. Here is my review of their flagship “Riserva” wine.
Dry red wine, 13.5% alcohol. Medium opacity, garnet color. Medium-high intensity nose, with red fruit (raspberry, strawberry, cherry), star anise and other spices. Very open nose, delicious. Medium body, bright acidity and tannic structure which makes the wine very light on its feet. Yet, there is also a good concentration of fruit in the palate, and the finish is extremely long.
An amazing nose and concentrated flavors accompanied by tense structure and a medium-light body. What an elegant wine!
