2014 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve [Rating: 5/5]

Tasted on December 25, 2024. #DailyWine #dnardi #Sangiovese #Tuscany #Flaccianello #Fontodi #Aged

By no means this is an everyday wine. Upon release this costs around $150. After 10 years, it is typically even higher. However, being the 2014 a less acclaimed vintage, I was able to buy a couple of these for a good price. Because we are in the holiday season, I thought this was time to try it out.

Dry red wine, 14.5% alcohol. Medium-high opacity, garnet color. High intensity nose, with plum, tobacco, cedar, spice box. The fruit is dark but fresh – not dried nor jammy. In the palate it has a high concentration of flavors despite feeling lighter on its feet than you would expect at 14.5% abv. Still, it has a mid-full body texture. The nose aromas echo in the mouth. The acidity and tannins are perfectly integrated at this stage, and the mouthfeel is very smooth. Endless finish with plums and pipe.

This wine strikes a perfect balance between fruit and oak, with a smooth texture and concentrated flavors. At age 10, this wine is drinking beautifully and has a long life ahead.
