Tasted on Nov. 3, 2024. #DailyWine #dnardi #Aglianico #Campania #Taurasi #Radici #Mastroberardino
I am very attached to this wine. I have tasted many vintages and it was one of the first wines I collected (I still have a 2001, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2014 in my cellar). Admittedly, my palate has shifted though the years away from oak, so now I don’t like it as much as I did. However, I enjoy the concentrated flavors, the fruit, the pipe tobacco aromas, and the elegance of this wine. The reason why I was excited to taste this vintage is that, for some reason, it is on sale in the US market. Typically this wine retails for 40-50 USD. Instead, I found this for only $32. This is an amazing value for such a wine with pedigree.
Dry red wine, 14.5%. Opaque, with garnet rims. High intensity nose, dominated by oak notes (vanilla, cedar, cigar box), with some dark fruit, particularly plums and blackberries. Medium-full body, with good concentration of flavors, and perfect balance with acidity that gives freshness. Some ripe tannins in the finish.
This wine has an exceptional balance between the acidity, tannins and the sweetness of the oak aromas. The nose is very intense, but you need to be into oaky wines to love this. I am not, but every now and then I do appreciate this style and enjoy a well made wine like this. For the price and pedigree of the wine, this is a steal.
