2022 Masciarelli Villa Gemma Abruzzo Bianco [Rating: 4/5 | $17]

Tasted on May 30, 2024. #DailyWine #dnardi #Trebbiano #Abruzzo #Masciarelli

This wine is a blend of 80% Trebbiano, 15% Cococciola, and 5% Chardonnay. It is a white from one of the reference producers of wine in Abruzzo. It also happens to be a winery very near to my family’s mountain house in Rapino, Abruzzo. This region is very “wild”, in the sense that it is still relatively untouched by tourism and globalization, despite having lots to offer: beautiful mountains and beaches, delicious food, local art (ceramics), and obviously very good wine.

Dry white wine, 13% alcohol. Very pale, lemon color. Medium intensity nose, with lemon, grass notes, and minerality. There is almost a smoky component. Medium body, medium-high concentration, almost a fizzy sensation in the mouthfeel due to the acidity. Medium-long finish with lemon and mineral notes.

This is another proof that Abruzzo is not just for red (Montepulciano) and pink (Cerasuolo) wines. The whites can be very seductive – and well priced – too.
