This is a 100% Montepulciano from the Marche region. Montepulciano is famous for its reds in Abruzzo. In Marche (neighboring region to the north), it is the dominant grape in the appellation Rosso Conero. This producer gets consistently good reviews and is a great value, so I wanted to try it myself.
Dry red wine, 13.5% alcohol. Medium-dark opacity, ruby rim. Medium intensity nose, filled with blackberry, plum, blueberry, savory herbs. There’s also a sweet candy aroma and star anise. Medium body, very good concentration of flavors. This wine feels rich in the palate. Thicker texture than you would think. And it finishes long with ripe dark fruit.
This is a rich Montepulciano, but without the sweet sensation that I have seen in some wines of Abruzzo. It is a fruit bomb in the Italian way: no sweet oak, no excess of alcohol – just lots of juicy, tasty, delicious fruit. What a value!!
