Tasted on May 3, 2024. #DailyWine #dnardi #Nebbiolo #Piedmont #Gattinara #Travaglini
This is an iconic wine that I have waited too long to review. It is a Gattinara, which is 100% Nebbiolo, from one of the largest and better producers: Travaglini. This is their entry level bottling. All their wines are iconic because of the quality of the juice inside, but they also come in a uniquely shaped bottle. This makes them very memorable.
I had many of these in the past, and I found out that they tend to show better when aged. I recently had a 2006 (18 year old!!) and it was magnificent. Also, they show better after lots of breathing (aeration). That’s why I popped this 8 hours in advance.
Dry red wine, 13.5% alcohol. Medium-light opacity, garnet color. Medium intensity nose, displaying cherries in different ways: fresh cherries, tart cherries, cherry cake. Also, strawberries and floral notes. Medium-light body, dusty tannins, medium concentration of flavors. Finishes very long with cherries, again.
This is an elegant wine. It is not bold, nor concentrated, nor full body. It is lighter, graceful, and very smooth. Based on my previous experiences, this is a wine that improves a lot with age. Give this baby 10 years, and you will be impressed!
