2020 Tommasi “Rafael” Valpolicella Classico Superiore [Rating: 4/5 | $19]

Tasted on March 26, 2024. #DailyWine #dnardi #Veneto #Valpolicella #Tommasi

Valpolicella wines typically are blends of multiple grape varieties. This one is 60% corvina, 25% rondinella, and 15% molinara.

Dry red wine, 12.5% alcohol. Medium opacity, bright ruby-purple. Medium intensity nose, with ripe aromas of plum, poutpurrie, incense, raisins. Very complex nose. Medium body, balanced, smooth. With medium-low acidity, this is softer than, for example, a Sangiovese. Flavors in the palate reflect the nose. Long finish with raisins.

This is a good example of a sweet nose, but not palate. There is some perceivable residual sugar, but it is very well balanced with the acidity and structure. The aromas are ripe, but not overripe. There are raisins, but not baked/dried figs, prunes etc. For those who like their wines to be ripe and not bone dry, this is a well balanced, remarkable example.
