Vintage after vintage, an affordable, widely available, crowd pleaser.
This is one of the most widely available white wines from Italy. But don’t let that fool you – it is very good! Vermentino is one of the many indigenous white grapes in Italy, mostly in Sardinia and a bit in Liguria and Tuscany. This is from a large producer in Sardinia, and this is their entry-level Vermentino. I haven’t reviewed it yet, so I thought it was time.
Very pale, straw yellow color. Medium intensity nose, with initial herbal and tropical fruit flavors. After more time, it reveals also mineral notes, papaya, cut grass, and glue. Very attractive. In the palate, it is medium body, soft, easy drinking, with a strong aromatic presence. The finish is long.
Overall, it is a bit reminiscent of Sauvignon blanc (but with more tropical notes). Compared to a Verdicchio, which is my favorite Italian white, this is much softer (less acidity). Try it – I bet you will like it!
