2019 Rizzi Barbaresco [Rating: 4/5 | $37]

Keywords: red wine; Nebbiolo grape; Piedmont region; 14.5% alcohol.

A cherry-layered-cake-flavored wine explosion.

Another Barbaresco from a reference producer. This is their entry-level Barbaresco, yet it is vineyard designated (as opposed to a blend from many vineyards), as Rizzi is the name of the specific vineyard (almost a monopole for this producer).

Garnet color, medium-light opacity. Medium intensity nose, with cherry, cherry liqueur, “pan di spagna” layered cake, and hints of roses and menthol. Full body, nice fleshy texture, some chewy tannins. The fruit aromas in the mouth are very intense and concentrated. The cherry note is dominant. Some tannins but overall smooth. This is an explosive wine, with fuller body and more fruit than it seems initially.
