This wine is one of the most iconic wines of Italy. It is also one the ones I splurged into the most because of the great quality/price ratio. Despite the cult status, they are still relatively affordable, retailing for around $50. I bought this wine a while ago on sale, and I put it aside because it is the vintage of my wedding. The intention is to see how it evolves in time.
I have also tried their 1999, 2000, 2001, 2006, 2010, 2014, and I set aside the 2017 and 2018 for my kids (those are their birth vintages). They tend to be big, bold wines with some oak influence and lots of character. The fruit is typically dark, and they are accompanied by lots of tannins. Needless to say, they age beautifully and if you are looking for an age-worthy wine to cellar, this is a wise choice.
This specific bottle is dark, ruby color. Completely opaque. This wine is a bomb of flavors. In the nose, there is an explosion of dark fruit, plums, amarena (tart cherries), tobacco, spice box, sage, and bean (peaty). Very tannic and high acidity, full body. The oak is pronounced, but it is delicious. Long finish. The aromatic intensity is impressive. No signs of age yet.
