This is the wine of my summer 2023. Not that it is just a summer wine, but I discovered this producer this summer, and I am really enjoying it now as I will in the future.
Rose’ wines do not get the attention they deserve. I am a big fan, but many people just think of them as a compromise between a white or red – why drink rose’ when you can drink a white or a red? The answer is because they are delicious. The aromatic profile can be mesmerizing and very different from whites (or reds), filled with red fruit, flowers, and crisp acidity. They also can be serious and ageworthy wines, and should not be dismissed as to-drink-immediately-only. In summary, they should be considered as a third option, along with whites and reds, with same dignity and giving same pleasure.
Tiberio is a relatively new producer in the region of Abruzzo, Italy. I have read a lot about them, and they are considered a rising star (the great wine critic Ian d’Agata has championed them for a long time). Needless to say, this summer in Italy I had to visit their winery. I went with my brother-in-law Antonio, and the owner Cristiana Tiberio (winemaker also) welcomed us. It was a very formative experience, as I learned a lot about their view on wine and winemaking. Their wines were exceptional. All of them were delicious, and the best thing is that they are still relatively inexpensive. This won’t last long, as the raving reviews become more and more common by the day, so I am taking advantage with stocking up as much wine as I can from them.
Cerasuolo is one of the two main rose’ from Italy (the other dominant rose’ is from the region of Apulia, or Puglia). Cerasuolo is made from Montepulciano grape, through the method of maceration. The juice is removed from the skins after only a few house, but the Montepulciano skin is so dark, that the resulting wine has a deep red cherry-like color, hence the name “Cerasuolo” (which means cherry-like).
This bottle was even darker than other Cerasuolo, dark cherry. Almost a light red wine color. Let this wine breath, because it will open up beatifully, showing aromas of strawberry, cherries, watermelon, and lemon. Even some spices are present (cinnamon). Vibrant acidity, dry, and with substantial weight. Really memorable.
