2018 Vajra Barolo “Albe” [Rating: 3/5 | $33]

It is difficult to find a Barolo under $35, let alone a good one. This is one of the very few exceptions.

Barolo is made of 100% nebbiolo grape, and compared to other nebbiolo it tends to be richer. Barolo producers make many different versions of Barolo, ranging from the basic, straight “Barolo” to single vineyard ones that cost much more. The sense of place (“terroire“) is very important in Barolo, as each different plot of land tends to give the wine a different nuance.

This is the entry-level Barolo from Vajra, a great producer. (By the way, any bottle of Vajra that you find is a safe bet). Its color is ruby, medium intense. The nose is note quite open yet; let it breath more and it might show better. You can find cherry, tart cherry, flowers, and cake aromas. It is much more flavorful in the palate. The tannins are strong, as you would expect in a young Barolo. The best thing of this wine are the aromas in the palate. The only reason I am not giving a higher rating is the weak intensity of flavors in the nose and finish (a bit short). A few years of aging – or simply decanting it for longer – might improve this a lot.
