2021 Podere 414 “Flower Power” Rose’ [Rating: 4/5 | $15]

Sangiovese is an amazing red grape. It really is high-quality and very versatile because it can make anything from fruit-forward, fresh wines to complex, age-worthy gems. It can also make fantastic rose’ wines. They tend to be crisp, fresh, and with rich aromatic intensity – but I would really emphasize crisp. If you like soft, low-acidity rose’, it may be better to look elsewhere.

Rose’ wines from sangiovese are quite common in Tuscany and neighboring regions in central Italy. The wineries already make red wines from sangiovese, so why not use sangiovese also to make a less-expensive rose’ for summer drinking?

This bottle is from a producer called Podere 414, in Maremma area of Tuscany. The wine has a pale pink/salmon color. The nose is intense, with raspberry and grapefruit. It is medium body, with a fresh and crisp palate that linger long for a very good finish packed with dried apricots. The best thing about this – besides the acidity – is the purity of the nose. It is straightforward – some would say simple – but what it does, it does very well.
