This is arguably the best – or a runner-up – value Chianti. What makes it a bargain is that the juice inside would be worth a lot more $$, but because the appellation is “Chianti”, as opposed to more prestigious ones, like Chianti Classico, the price tag is very reduced. The generic “Chianti” is a much broader appellation than “Chianti Classico” (or other specific Chianti appellations), and they don’t command high prices. This is good news for the consumer who can find real gems for every-day prices.
Giacomo Mori is a consistently good producer that year after year makes delicious Chianti. This specific bottle is 95% sangiovese, with the rest being another local red grape variety. The color is ruby, medium intensity. The nose presents red fruit (raspberry), giuggiole (jujube, or chinese red dates), and rosemary. The palate is fresh and vertical, with great acidity to counter the fruit. Very smooth, with well-integrated tannins. The finish is long and a bit sweeter, with raspberry jam rather than fresh fruit. One could say that it is a simple wine, dominated by red fruit, but the purity of the fruit – and the balanced mouthfeel – is impeccable.
