2021 Collestefano Verdicchio di Matelica [Rating: 4/5 | $18]

For France (and many other countries) two white wines are worth remembering because they fill up the display sections in stores: Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. For Italy, there are a lot of white grape varieties, but one that is worth remembering is definitely Verdicchio.

Verdicchio is a white grape that makes age-worthy, aromatic, high-acidity wines. The best expressions come from the region of Marche, in center Italy. There are two famous appellations: “Verdicchio di Matelica” and “Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi”. If you like Riesling, especially the dry ones, you will like this one. It has similar fresh acidity and sometimes citrus aromas, but it is bone dry.

This specific wine is white-ish, pale straw color. It has an explosive nose, with peach, lemon, and grass accents. As expected, it has mouthwatering acidity that fills your palate. A long finish with candied fruit. The taste and aromas make you think it is a sweet wine, but it is bone dry. The acidity makes it suitable for aging, and although I have never had an aged Verdicchio, I put a couple of these bottles aside and will taste them in 10 years. It should be worth the wait. At $15-18, this wine is a great deal!
