I am a big fan of rose’ wines – the real rose’, not the off-dry ones that are made for cheap for people who just want some alcohol and sugar. Rose’ wines are dry, crisp, fresh, and with a lot of aromatics. They also are not too high in alcohol, which makes them great summer wines.
Planeta is a reliable producer from Italy. Their entire range of wines are very good to excellent, and many are affordable.
The Planeta Rose’ is a blend of 50% Nero d’Avola (indigenous grape variety) and 50% Syrah, from their vineyards in Sicily. At around $12-15, it is a great value. The nose is very rich, with tropical notes, like pineapple, but also lots of flowers. The mouthfeel is also a standout, smooth and fuller body than you would think given the lower alcohol. It coats your palate.
